Chart angles

Midheaven (MC) and IC

Learn what the Midheaven and IC describe in a birth chart, and how to read public direction and private foundations without reducing either to a prediction.

The Midheaven is not a job title or a promise of status. The IC is not a fixed description of family. Together, these angles offer a symbolic way to explore how outer direction and inner grounding meet in a changing life.

The vertical axis of a birth chart

Midheaven: public direction

The Midheaven, often marked MC, is the highest point of a chart. It can describe visibility, contribution, responsibility, and the direction you are learning to inhabit publicly.

IC: roots and private ground

Opposite the Midheaven, the IC speaks to inner life, belonging, origin stories, and the conditions that help you feel settled enough to grow.

An axis, not two separate labels

Public purpose and private life affect one another. A useful reading notices the conversation between them rather than treating either point as a standalone answer.

Read MC and IC with context

01

Start with the signs

The signs on the MC and IC describe style and tone, not a fixed profession or personality. Let lived experience lead the interpretation.

02

Find the rulers and planets nearby

The ruling planets, planets in the tenth and fourth houses, and close aspects add important context to what these angles may emphasize.

03

Ask a practical question

Consider where you need a more honest public direction, stronger boundaries, rest, or a steadier base. Astrology is most useful when it returns you to real choices.
