House systems

Learn why astrology house systems differ, what Whole Sign and quadrant systems do, and how to compare charts without chasing a single definitive answer.

House systems are interpretive frameworks, not a test with one universally correct answer. If a placement changes houses, compare the relevant life themes and your lived experience before deciding whether either view is useful.

Why charts can place a planet differently

Houses divide the local sky

A house system turns the sky at a specific birth time and location into twelve life areas. Different mathematical approaches draw those divisions differently, especially at higher latitudes.

Whole Sign starts each house at a sign

In Whole Sign houses, the entire sign of the Ascendant is the first house and each following sign becomes the next house. This produces a clean sign-to-house sequence.

Quadrant systems use the angles

Quadrant systems such as Placidus anchor house divisions to the Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven, and IC. Their house cusps can vary in size and may place a planet in a different house.

Compare systems with care

01

Keep the planets and signs constant

Your planetary signs and aspects do not change when you change house systems. Begin with what remains consistent before focusing on a shifted house placement.

02

Compare one concrete theme at a time

If a planet moves from one house to another, consider both life areas in relation to real patterns, responsibilities, and circumstances. Avoid treating a difference as evidence that one chart is wrong.

03

Choose a method, then learn its language

Consistency is more useful than switching systems until one delivers a dramatic answer. A skilled reading uses a coherent method and stays open to complexity.
